So. The weather continues to be pretty, even if yesterday was actually rather cool. Still, managed a walk by the seaside and a bit of Kadriorg... not with the new lens though, there's only so many wideangle pictures of the sea one can take after all. (I did take a few at home of the kitties, mainly Pätsu and Kribu, and it works just fine. Although glaring sunlight seems to cause more problems for it than for normal lenses - the sunshade thingy doesn't really seem to be much help, but I guess it cannot be bigger than it is or it will start covering the field of view up too much.)

Damn it's heavy though. Not on paper - only, what, 150 g more than my preferred lens (the 50-200mm seems to be the one I use the most when outdoors), but it SO feels when holding it.

Anyway, the new season of Doctor Who has started.

Spoilerish ramblings regarding 3x01: Smith and Jones. )

I got my new lens today, yippee! It's... so bloody cool. :-D

I have no idea really what I'll do with it, but a proper wide-angle lens should open up so many new possibilities... I mean, trying it out (had to do it immediately upon getting home, of course) I could practically stand with the camera pressed against the bookshelf and the picture still managed to have three full shelves on it.

It's certainly heavy though, chunkier and heavier than any other lens I've got - even though I expected that, it still feels all... like a brick. No matter though.

In other important news, I seem to have adorned my desktop with a Harry Potter countdown thingy... spurred on by the release of the Deathly Hallows cover art, no doubt. 112 days, 6 hours and 45 minutes left, apparently.

I planned to gift myself upon the anniversary of my birth with a new lens... but of course, none of the stores I went today had that particular lens in stock.

I found that most disagreeable.

Oh well. Ordered it now... I've decided that a wide angle zoom is the one I, ahem, "need" the most right now (or in general - one that should come in handy now and then over the coming years, especially if I ever feel like doing some architecture photography). And I was all set on getting it today... not that I need it today, but would have been nice. *whines a little*

At least I didn't return home entirely empty-handed... directed mum to get me the new, restored, proper DVD of Kevade, and also finally got around to getting the DVD of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, as she insisted on getting me a birthday present. And cake. Cake's nice (I hope anyway, haven't tried that particular sort of cake before).

I was hit by the oddest realisation in various bookstores today though as I wandered around, trying to find something - anything - that might hold my interest, for mum to get me... and there was just nothing. Absolutely nothing in two entire large bookstores that as much as would have made me idly wonder if I'd want it or not... I just seemed to have zero interest in anything that looked even remotely like a book. I'm hoping that it's just... well... today, that I wasn't in the right mood for books, although bookstores have proven to be entirely uninteresting for me during several visits lately. Maybe when The Deathly Hallows gets released, it will make me more interested in actual books again.

I'm not sure the fresh air yesterday helped that much... feeling really rather crappy today. Headache, massive sneezing, sore throat again... no fever now at least (but some last night again). Plus my neck, shoulders, upper back and upper arms ache. A lot. Didn't feel it yesterday but I suppose it's a sign of how bloody unfit I've got... wouldn't surprise me if it's because of the camera yesterday. Although it's not really that heavy, so I guess I just need more practice. ;-)

I did feel the strain when taking vertical pictures, felt fairly strong muscle shake in the upper arms then (I think the weather didn't help). Bleh. (And then big idiot men write long posts in photo forums whining about the trend in having a few smaller DSLRs available too and saying all cameras should be huge bricks because they keep hitting the wrong buttons and don't have space for their fingers... just bloody get one of the bigger cameras yourself then!)

And it's raining today. Grrr.

I know I should really go out anyway... I need a new mouse, for example. But I suppose I can still survive without that for a few days. It's just the scroll wheel acting up and mostly not working... just need to remember to use the keyboard scroll wheel more then for now. And arrow keys. Still annoying... the mouse isn't even that old, so it's not an expense I counted on having any time yet. Now for the search for a usable mouse that has a couple of extra buttons without being an over the top l33t gamer mouse costing a fortune... seems this middle range isn't that well catered for these days (i.e. the middle ground between the most basic mice, which I don't want, and the ultra super mega übercool gaming mice, which I certainly don't want).

And I think that's enough whining for now. ;-)

Mom decided she wants to go to the movies tomorrow, not today, as today is wet and foggy and she wants to take pictures of the fog. Typical! Oh well... considering I have been sitting inside for a week, being forced to go out both today and tomorrow probably isn't such a bad thing really. ;-)

Of course, the question is which lens I should take... probably the 50-200mm then. Hmm.

And I hope it's not as wet out there as it looks, as I'm a little worried about wetness and cameras... damn the K10D for looking attractive in that sense. ;-) Being weatherproof is something that might come in handy a lot around here. Perhaps something to think about in a couple of years. :-D

I wonder if it's doing all this work that is making sure I'm not actually getting any better... have had fever again every evening now, and massively sneezy mornings. In any case, the nice people at work are making sure I won't have a chance to go wandering about in the cold moist weather and get worse, what with sending me a bit more work. And then a bit more work. "A bit" meaning a full day's workload again or so.

On the other hand, the work I did in the first three days this week would just rather nicely cover the 70mm f/2.4 prime that Photopoint has just started selling... argh!! I need to remind myself I don't need a full collection of primes at every imaginable focal length. I'm not a photographer! I don't even dare to change the lens anywhere but at home! (At least I've got better at that. Of course, the more often I change it, the more likely I'm going to face the issue of sensor cleaning at some point, which is something I don't yet want to think about. I should get some cleaning kit though, at least an air blower.) I need to remember that there are really only two more lenses I "need"... one normal one with a bit more range than the kit lens... the Sigma 17-70mm should do nicely there, plus it's a macro lens, covering that need too, and then a cheapish telezoom... yet bloody Pentax keeps seducing me with those small flat limited primes which are just so very, very pretty and small...

*weeps*

Pah. I should start working instead of daydreaming about prime lenses. (And who the hell daydreams about prime lenses anyway? It's a bit silly.) And take advantage of the fact that I don't have a kitty climbing around me at the moment.

Had fever again last night, and sneezing like... like, well, someone that sneezes a lot. (Hmpf, this was supposed to come out wittier.) I wish I could get rid of that morning sore throat thing, where I can't really make a peep for the first hour or two after getting up as my throat's too sore. At least it disappears for the rest of the day.

Just started with work when I got a call from the bank (this is getting obnoxious), this time from my personal account manager, offering individual investment consultation. I don't want individual (or any other sort of) investment consultation... I don't want to invest into anything. Why do bank people think that as soon as you start earning a bit more than the average person, you immediately want to give all that money to them? I'd rather invest in other things, such as DVDs. Or lenses.

Mmm... lenses... after taking a few pics yesterday at home with the 50mm f/1.7 at home (fine lens, that!), I'm starting to desire the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 prime too that Photopoint is now offering... not just because it's even brighter (the depth of field makes it difficult to use anything below f/2.2-2.5 anyway) but because 50mm is a bit too impractical at home. And then there's still the Sigma 17-70mm zoom that is better range and brighter than the kit zoom... and then I'd still want a (cheapish) bigger zoom with more reach anyway, say a 70-300mm or something like that. Grrr. Have I mentioned I hate DSLRs?

eBay is dangerous. Very, very dangerous.

But nice. :-)

Received the 50mm f/1.7 lens for my K100D today that I bought a week or two ago... got here all the way from Turkey without any problems, it seems. And it's looking like a very nice lens indeed - will definitely be the one for indoors. Had to try it instantly of course - boy the depth of field with these bigger cameras and wide apertures is something else.

Also received the Target novelisation for The Reign of Terror, and some CD I got for mom.
I like eBay... not sure my bank account agrees, but tough. ;-) With the amount of work I've been doing lately, it shouldn't really complain too much anyway.

Was told yesterday that I was to get a lot of new work today... so now here I am, having completed everything else I had, and it appears there is no one of those people present who could actually tell me if there is new work and if so, where to get it... yay. Well, nice to have a small break, but not nice when the work (if/when I get it) still needs to get done by a deadline. Pah! (And on a related note: why oh why do people think it's great fun to draw up legal texts in 6 pt font? Small print indeed... too small to read properly, let alone translate, even at 150% when on a 1280x1024 px screen!)

Musti update: she is still dragging her hind legs after her, and they (or the spine area in the back which was supposedly inflammatory as well) obviously hurt, but the last couple of days seem to have been a little better again. She is sleeping a lot but when moving around, is a little quicker and doesn't lie down every 2 metres, so that is probably good. She's still a little tank though whenever she feels the need to attack my lap.

Haven't had a chance to take my lovely new big camera out again yet, but I did find a shoebox to keep it in. Need to get a proper bag for it next. And a tripod. And some more lenses... well, just having a fast, bright lens for indoor/lower light use would be good for starters (bidding on one on eBay now, no idea if I'll get it though). And eventually I do want an external flash, provided I can figure out how to use it! No idea at all how those things work, heh. So more work (read: money) would be nice right now.

Yes, I have the new camera. It is very, very, very pretty. :D

And very, very heavy. And complicated. And scary. And can take nice pictures. :D Just that it will take some more learning to actually start getting really nice pictures. :D

Damn it's heavy though. And my dear little Panasonic looks so tiny next to it. :D

Friday's come and almost gone and I still don't have my shiny new camera. (Yes, I know I only got the invoice and paid for it yesterday evening, but a girl may pout, mayn't she?)

Tired. A week does that to me, it seems, and I didn't even have much work today. Well, a bit, and some of it was annoyingish, but mostly because I was too tired for it and kept having problems focusing. It's not that my mind wanders off elsewhere, these days it's more just that sometimes I can't seem to be able to have any idea of what I'm doing - my hands keep typing but I have real problems concentrating on what it is I do. Or why I'm doing it, or what I'm typing. Which leads to mistakes, such as translating "owner of the site" as "owner of the file" and having no idea about that until an editor points it out to me. Bleh.

I wonder if I should watch a bit of first Doctor... don't want to, want to save those last few stories. Waaa!! :'( At least there's Torchwood starting probably next month and the Sarah Jane Adventures next year, both of which actually excite me more right now than third series of the new Who itself. At least with those I'm guaranteed to have leads I can actually like. On the other hand, maybe I'll mellow enough by Christmas / next spring to be a bit more lenient towards the Tenth Doctor, who knows. I've certainly mellowed enough to be actually - gasp! - enjoy the 9DAs... just finished Winner Takes All earlier, and while not a literary masterpiece, it was a fairly enjoyable read.

Why did I bother coming to the office this early if there is no work? *mutters to self* I guess I only have myself to blame for doing everything there was yesterday... At least I got (at least I think I got) a few nice snapshots of some fallen leaves on my way to work - beautiful weather, even if a little windy, and I actually remembered to take the W10 with me.

In other news, I gave in last night and put in the order for the K100D kit. Plus the Pentax 50-200mm telephoto zoom lens. Plus the required accessories (AA battery charger + 4 batteries kit and an extra four batteries, and a 1 GB memory card - I'm getting a lot of SD memory cards these days, but each camera needs them... at least the SDs can be used in the FZ5 as well as W10 and the DSLR). I decided I don't actually need to stay over a certain limit on my bank account this month. Of course, the camera is still not in stock, so I have exactly zero idea when I'll actually get it, but at least it's done now, and I suppose that this way I'll at least get it once it's in stock again (well, once they send me an invoice and I've actually paid for it all and stuff). Damn Pentax for making a pretty little DSLR that seems to be so surprisingly popular! ;-)

Damn for the window here being so dirty... there's a terrific crane shadow on the wall of the building that's being constructed right outside here. I could open the window properly I guess, but if I do that and start taking pictures here, it might make people think I'm bored or something. Well, I am a bit, wouldn't mind some work right now, but anyway.

Decided to stay home today as I've been having a small (but nasty/annoying) fever since Sunday, which didn't pass yesterday as I'd hoped. Managed to breathe in some dust yesterday too which led to a somewhat unpleasant evening and a totally cough-ridden night... was around 4 am that I finally managed to sort of fall asleep, after getting just too exhausted from all the coughing. It's been a little better today but now I'm completely aching inside and breathing isn't easy as my lungs and muscles are all hurting.

At least I think it's "just" dust-caused cough and not a cold-induced cough... hopefully will pass by tonight. As will the fever (which mostly already has, now I'm hoping it won't come back as I really should get back to the office today). I'm rather tired, have been working most of the day anyway (at least I got some reasonably nice work for doing at home), and hungry. And cold. And there was no interesting mail today (read: post-office notes about me having received new parcels) either, pah! ;-)

I'm getting more and more tempted to buy that damned camera though as soon as it's in stock again. Otherwise I'll just spend way too much time thinking about it. Of course, then I'll start thinking about the accessories I'd "need" (an external flash - probably a requirement at some point; other/extra lenses and such)... grr, why does life have to be so difficult? ;-)

At least working at home has one major bonus point of being able to go and warm my nose in kittyfur whenever I feel like it, or whenever a kitty feels like it. :-)

Get Smart is finally on DVD, but only through some specific US store that only likes US customers. Pah! At least it seems the limited availability will only be in force for a year, so in a year this might actually be something to think about more properly. And a year will give me time to put aside some money for it. And to decide if I really wanted it (although I've wanted it since before DVDs existed ;-)), but a lot can change in a year.

Speaking of wants... argh, should I buy a DSLR or not? Okay, so I've been agonising over this issue for a few years now (me, indecisive? never!), but now that there is the Pentax K100D, and now that I've learned a little bit more about photography, and now that the quality of the cameras I already own does not always satisfy me, it might be the right time to take that plunge... it's mostly the thought of the weight, even more than the cost, that is still making me a bit suspicious (as for the cost - I could get the body with kit lens, batteries & a charger, and a few large memory cards for the same amount of money that I paid for my first digital camera, the dear old Pentax Optio 330 - things have changed, yes!).
