Well, I survived the dentist.
The procedure itself was extremely quick (don't think the actual part dealing with extraction took over ten minutes) and painless (although the three injections were prickly). Couldn't feel my tongue or lower lip for a couple of hours afterwards.
Am getting a bit tired of the taste of blood though. There's been some bleeding (can't tell if it's still bleeding or not, what with not being allowed to rinse and not being allowed to poke at it, but my tongue looked considerably less bloody now than when I got to work - will see if I need to find more gauze or something later on, if it's still bleeding) and the numbness wore off over an hour ago. So it's hurting a bit now... but for the time being, not more than the usual gum tenderness I've had after dental work, i.e. annoying but within tolerable levels. Not going to take painkillers yet - will if it gets worse or stays like this when I want to go to sleep.
Felt quite faint at work (yes, I actually went to work and did work for 2.5 hours - decided to take advantage of the numbness and do the one thing I had left before holidays) at one point, but I think it was when the numbness started wearing off and I could actually feel and taste all that blood. Ugh.
Anyway, I'm officially on holiday now. Hopefully I'll actually get to enjoy some of it. At least I was informed by the dentist that ice cream is very okay as food. And as a good five hours have now passed since the visit, I think/hope it's safe to eat a bit of it now.

Blood flavour ice cream. Sorry, couldn't help thinking of that! *offers brainbleach*

Date: 9 May 2008 13:16 (UTC)Ice cream seems to have got rid of the blood taste. So perhaps the bleeding has actually stopped for now.
*crosses fingers hoping the blood will clot properly and stay there*

Date: 9 May 2008 13:00 (UTC)Ice cream is definitely a good option, I think. *hands you a large tub of your favorite flavor*

Date: 9 May 2008 13:19 (UTC)Thanks! Have now had a small bowl. It's mercifully got rid of the taste of blood. A bit freezing now though... should possibly warm myself under a blanket at some point, as hot tea (or hot soup, or any other nice hot things) seems to be out for the time being.

Date: 9 May 2008 13:54 (UTC)I doubt I can enjoy it too fully, but hopefully I'll be in a good enough state by the second week at least to be able to walk around and such.

Enjoy the Ice Cream Diet (TM).

Date: 9 May 2008 15:07 (UTC)I'm very much hoping it'll heal properly. Right now it's bleeding a bit again, so I'm scared again. Bleh.

Date: 9 May 2008 18:04 (UTC)I wouldn't be surprised if I ended up losing a bit of weight during the holiday. Foreseeing a yoghurt, sour milk and juice diet for most of it. Heh.

Date: 9 May 2008 18:24 (UTC)I rather hope so too. I'd kick the bloody thing to stop bleeding, but I doubt that would work quite as intended...

Date: 9 May 2008 23:15 (UTC)When I had a wisdom tooth extracted it healed very quickly - I think I was perfectly fine after two or three days - so it shouldn't spoil your holidays.

Date: 10 May 2008 06:06 (UTC)So I'm feeling reasonably good, although after waking up today, I do really rather wish I could brush my teeth properly already! (i.e. not just very gently on one side and with nothing but water.)
The dentist didn't specify which ice cream... had mint&chocolate at home. Which was good. The other kind we had at home has caramelised nut pieces in it, so probably not the best choice yet. Should get more ice cream...
I would guess wisdom teeth are both harder and easier to deal with at the same time... harder to extract, possibly more prone to problems, but on the other hand, the empty place will be in the very back, which should make resuming normal life (like eating and brushing teeth) easier.
Mine is/was the first of the big lower molars (there's another tooth behind it and the spot for the one wisdom tooth that has never come out), so it's a big empty spot right in the place I mostly used for chewing. Which means that even if it seems to be healing well by now, I'll still need to be extra careful for a couple of weeks to avoid any chance of ruining the newly formed blood clot.
But I think I can deal with being careful - as long as it's not hurting, it shouldn't ruin the holidays (which I planned to spend at home relaxing anyway).
