kribuWent ahead and ordered my shiny new desktop computer today. Will, with luck, get done by Friday, but as they don't seem to have the 750 GB Western Digitals drives in stock right now (and I'd really prefer WD - I know no drives are infallible but I have more faith in WD than in others), I'm not quite sure if that will happen.
On the laptop again now... looks like I'm not to use the desktop in the evenings. Four restarts today (after being fine in the morning and for a few hours after getting home) before I gave up. Well, as long as it doesn't die on me completely before I get the new one...
The main problem (both with getting a new one and/or reinstalling Windows, which I considered but just didn't feel up to, in case that wouldn't solve the issue) is that I don't remember my main e-mail account password - it's nicely saved in Outlook so I have no trouble using it, but of course it shows as asterisks, and I have NO idea what I've done with any record of the actual password. It's a service provider issued one, not one of my own, so no chance of guessing it either. Sent them an e-mail this morning asking for advice/resetting the password but no reply. If they keep ignoring the mail, I guess I'd eventually need to call them. *doesn't want to but really needs to keep that e-mail account*
At least the new desktop looks lovely on paper - a quad core AMD Phenom 9550 processor, 4 GB of RAM, 2x750 GB hard drives, a video card mightier than anything I've ever been close to... all wrapped up in what's supposed to be a relatively silent case and lots of passive cooling. So no gaming but otherwise, as the salesman assured me, I should be fine (I'd better be, considering they're selling this set under the name of Silentium and I rather expect they've considered that it shouldn't overheat when in use). In any case, also got a year extra warranty (3 years altogether, first year on site). Not that I'd like it to burn down. Oh, and XP Pro - at least there are no problems still getting XP with desktops.
Haven't done any Exchange writing today yet (it's quite sad what a day at work does to the brain) but made some nice progress over the weekend. And it's all saved on the laptop as well as the external hard drive (and I think I should save it to google docs too, to be on the safe side).

Date: 1 September 2008 20:18 (UTC)Music takes up a lot - I've got most of my CD collection ripped, plus a lot of other stuff. Can't really delete that as the whole purpose for it is to be always accessible on the computer...
But photos do take up a lot of space, too. Perhaps I'll give in and set my new camera on 10 MP now instead of the current 6. I still firmly believe the 14 MP is a bit overkill!
