The Muse - this time in the shape of [ profile] chilliconcarne, to whom I moaned about a lack of ideas and who dutifully provided one without any hesitation - was kind to me, so ... Scoffy, here is your birthday ficlet! I hope you enjoy it. As requested - SSHG, a snowy day. ~900 words, very tame. Warning for fluffiness. Not betaed.

A/N: Not mine; all characters belong to J.K.Rowling. Written for Scoffy, whose prompt was “SSHG on a snowy day”; plot idea owed to Chilli.

Snow Day

‘Is this bloody blizzard ever going to be over?’

‘Don’t pout, Severus. It doesn’t suit you.’

Privately, Hermione thought that Severus looked terribly cute when he was pouting. Or sulking. Scowling, even.

Not that she’d have been foolish enough to tell him that. She’d done it once or twice before, and had to suffer a long lecture on how he, Severus Snape, was most definitely not cute. Ever. And as much as she loved hearing his voice, she rather preferred it when he was using it for something more pleasant, such as murmuring sweet nothings in her ear in the evenings, when sharing a cup of tea in their cosy living room.

Severus fidgeted with a book for a few moments, before getting up and storming out of the room in a huff.

* * *

The weather was quite pleasant, once the wind quieted down. Yes, with the unusually thick blanket of snow covering the grounds, they’d have to forego their usual Saturday afternoon stroll in the small grove near their cottage, but Hermione didn’t see why this should be a reason to spend the whole day indoors.

‘Severus?’ she called out. ‘I’m going out for a bit – the snow is so lovely! Are you coming?’

‘I’m busy.’

‘Well, if you’re sure…’

Hermione quickly put on her jacket, scarf, hat and gloves, and stepped out. Severus would accompany her later; she was sure that if she stayed out long enough, he couldn’t resist his curiosity.

Taking a deep breath of the wonderfully fresh air, she marvelled at the sight greeting her. She wasn’t used to seeing this much snow at home – in the French or Swiss mountains, perhaps, but not in good old Hogsmeade. She wasn’t about to complain though; unlike her grumpy best friend and lover currently busy huffing and puffing over his latest manuscript, she adored the glitteringly pure fluffiness of fresh soft snow.

‘Hmm,’ she mused. Not that fluffy, actually. Not cold enough for that, no… the perfect snow for a snowball fight, in fact. Or for building a fort. Or for…

Her lips curled upwards in a sly smile. Yes. That would be just perfect.

Determined not to waste any time, she Summoned the few things she needed, and set to work.

* * *

Half an hour later, she was done. Brushing snow off her mittens – she’d had the foresight of Summoning a pair to replace her usual thinner gloves, as this particular sort of work could be unmercifully cruel on hands lacking in sufficient insulation – she took a step back and admired her handiwork.

Two black eyes of coal glittered in the pale white face. The nose was large and crooked; Hermione was especially proud of getting the hook just right. That had taken some skill but Transfiguration had always been among her best subjects, after all. She’d left the colour unchanged, not wanting it to arouse too much suspicion amongst random passers-by.

The mouth was set in a thin, black line, expressing just the proper amount of grumpiness. Again, Hermione could find no fault with her work. Even the line of black buttons further down was exactly straight.

With the last step, she’d deliberated quite a bit before making her decision. On the one hand, the billowing black cloak was very definitely a giveaway. On the other... it just had to be there, to complete the look. And she could always remove it. Later.

* * *

‘Are you ever going to come back insi—’

Severus stopped dead on the doorstep, his mouth agape. He blinked a few times, as if trying to make the hallucination go away.

Hermione opted to wait for his reaction before saying something. In hindsight, this might not have been the best idea ever after all... Severus was a wonderful, if prickly, man, but one had to be careful when making fun of him, or appearing to do so.

She closed her eyes, focusing her thoughts on hoping he wouldn’t take offence.

‘A snowman.’ He sounded astonished, having finally found his voice. ‘You’ve made a snowman.’

He circled the snowman, tilting his head to get a better view at the nose.

‘I, er, couldn’t resist,’ Hermione offered a bit lamely.

Severus gave her a quizzical look.

‘It’s just that you’re always so… so, well, grumpy about snow, and it was just calling out to me and—’

‘I never knew you had such talent.’

Hermione raised an eyebrow, wondering if he was mocking her. But no, he sounded sincere.

Severus took another look at the nose. ‘The likeness… well, it’s quite amazing.’

Hermione grinned.

In hindsight, that had not been a good idea, as she decided a moment later, coughing on the ground, spitting snow everywhere. Severus had surprisingly good aim for a man who spent nearly all his time with books or potions. She made a mental note to find out later if he’d ever played Chaser.

* * *

Panting, Hermione toppled to the ground. ‘I give up!’ she cried. ‘You win. Can we go in and have some tea now?’

Severus, his lean form bearing evidence of Hermione having got multiple hits in before surrendering, dropped down next to her and wrapped his cloak around her. ‘In a moment. I have a confession to make first… this was rather—’

‘Fun?’ Hermione supplied.

Averting his eyes, Severus nodded.

The End.
